Bhubaneswar is known as the temple city of India as here you will find more than 500 temples and Lingaraja Temple is one of the major temples among them. This time, I shared my experience and complete tour details of Lingaraja Temple Bhubaneswar in this blog.

Lingaraj Temple History

The Lingaraj Temple is the oldest Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Harihara, an amalgamation of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. It stands as Bhubaneswar's largest temple and a renowned tourist attraction, serving as a prominent landmark in the state. The Lingaraj Temple, constructed in the 11th century by King Jajati Keshari of the Somvanshi dynasty, holds a deep historical significance. It is also believed that the sacred Swayambhu Shivalinga within the temple had been revered as far back as the 7th century.

Why is Lingaraj Temple famous?

In my point of view, below points make the famous to Lingaraj temple

  • It is Kalinga architecture temple and main temple is 180 ft (55 m) tall
  • Temple complex has 108 other small size temples
  • With 6,000 daily visitors, the temple's atmosphere transforms on Shivratri when it hosts an astonishing 200,000 devotees.
  • The name 'Lingaraja' is a tribute to Lord Shiva, with 'Linga' representing his divine authority as the King.

This was my first time visiting and I was impressed with temple architecture and rituals. Overall this is a good tourist place for all.
